For this project, Kim Kardashian was my main inspiration. It is fascinating to me that someone who does so little can share so much. This inspiration came from my research into Egyptian art history and the way they displayed the human body. An image of a person almost always looked the same and the way to tell a difference was simply by reading the name written underneath the image. In this world, we thrive on showing off our unique features in an endless stream of selfies. Kim Kardashian is exceptionally good at this and even published her book filled with them, “selfish”. On 450 pages filled with pictures of her face she shares everything and nothing at the same time, so I did the same.
During this process I also created a series of videos with alternative aesthetics. The way we glorify the unrealistic and partly fake bodies of the Kardashian family is really strange to me, but the exaggerating of features has been something we do since the beginning. So I decided to exaggerate some other features, and also some of the modern rituals we perform on ourselves to achieve these unreal beauty ideals.
